Blog post by Rachel Kershaw writer of Life in Geordieland, the blog guide to NewcastleGateshead.

As you may have worked out by now, Great Exhibition of the North celebrates innovators, businesses, artists and designers that have shaped our present and continue to inspire our future.

This means that there really is something for everyone during the 80-day programme of events. Whether you’re a music buff, an art lover, design guru, or simply looking for a fun day out over the summer, you’ve come to the right place!

With so much to experience during Great Exhibition of the North, you might not know where to start but don’t worry, I’ve already scoured the event listings and picked out my favourites in each category. I’ll be blogging about Art, Music, Digital and Design in future posts but first, here are five things all about innovation that have caught my eye and you can experience during Great Exhibition of the North along the Get North Innovation Trail!

1. The Rocket Reimagined

There’s much excitement surrounding Rocket’s return to Tyneside, I can’t wait to see the original locomotive back at its birthplace. Not only that, visitors to Newcastle’s Discovery Museum will also get the chance to experience what it would have been like to step on board Rocket thanks to some rather innovative virtual reality technology by Hedgehog Lab. Rocket Reimagined promises to be a fully immersive and memorable experience! Experience a 360degree view atop Rocket as you whistle through the ever changing scenery. The guys at Hedgehog Lab have also devised a brilliant downloadable Rocket which match Stephenson’s original plans so that you can have on your phone and scale up to examine the detail. You can find out even more in my blog, Get North 2018 for a Whistlestop Tour of Trains.

2. Get North Water Sculpture

You may have already seen an artist’s impression of what the UK’s largest water sculpture will look like on the River Tyne but I don’t think anything can prepare you for how impressive this captivating installation will be. Every hour from 10am till 11pm during Great Exhibition of the North, jets of water will dance to the tune of a specially commissioned soundtrack. Evening performances will be accompanied by a light display too. This is one innovation that is not to be missed!

ITV News sent Gregg Easteal to find out how the company (also called Water Sculpture!) combine creativity and innovation to create the impressive commission.

3. Multiverse Arcade

Imagine placing your hands into an arcade machine that plays secret video messages from the year 2066 directly on to your palms – that’s Multiverse Arcade! Using innovative technology to share young people’s thought on how to change the world, Multiverse Arcade is sure to get you thinking about the future of our planet.

4. Robots – Then and Now

Think robots are a modern invention? Think again! They’ve been around for hundreds of years. Of course, the 16th century versions are a far cry from the lifelike humanoids that could be a common sight in the future. Robots – Then and Now is a family-friendly exhibition taking place at Life Science Centre at the same time as Great Exhibition of the North is full of fascinating and thought-provoking robots that will leave you in awe.

5. LEGO® Timeline of Northern Innovation

What better way to learn more about Northern England’s many incredible innovations than through the medium of Lego? Pay a visit to the historical and rather beautiful Mining Institute during Great Exhibition of the North to see an amazing 3D timeline created by local Lego architect Steve Mayes. He has used over 50,000 plastic pieces to create intricate models of Stephenson’s Rocket, Jodrell Bank, Graphene, Great North Run and many more iconic innovations. You can even get crafty with Lego yourself and have a go at creating your own model of something innovate that has inspired you from the North.

And these are just five great things to look out for along the Get North Innovation Trail. Don’t miss Little Inventors’ new creations made real, transport from the past to the future with Horse to Hyperloop and chance to explore a range of exciting new and emerging technologies with Emerging Tech @ Get North.
