Blog post by Rachel Kershaw writer of Life in Geordieland, the blog guide to NewcastleGateshead. In this series of blog posts – Five of the Best – Rachel has had the hard task of picking out five events, pop-ups, exhibits and activities from the 80-day programme that she thinks are the ones not to miss!

You don’t have to be a digital guru to enjoy the many digital inspired events that are part of Great Exhibition of the North. Whether we realise it or not, digital innovations are all around us, influencing our lives and shaping our world.

I was amazed to discover how much Northern talent there is in the digital industry and have uncovered five of the best events during Great Exhibition of the North that celebrate our digital success and get us thinking about the impact of digital technology on our lives. Add them to your calendar for some amazing experiences this summer!

1. 1up North

Northumbria University is set to host a two-week long extravaganza of all things gaming from across the North from 2 July – 15 July. You can experience the latest digital innovations in the gaming sectors and get hands on with multiplayer games, workshops, competitions, hackathons and even find out about careers in this industry.

2. How Will You Fly?

The clever people at MAADIGITAL have created the ‘How Will You Fly’ app (available on IOS and Andriod). Download it then head to Ouseburn Valley for an exciting augmented reality experience and bring the Winged Tails of the North Trail to a new dimension. Discover what you would look like with wings, imagine flying versions of your friends and family, create your own designs, then share your creations on social media. It’s a free and fun way of trying out new digital technology and exploring a quirky corner of Newcastle.

3. Deepframe – World’s Largest Mixed Reality Display

I am fascinated by this immersive experience which blends the virtual world with the real environment at various locations across Newcastle and Gateshead. Deepframe was created by Tees Valley studio Animmersion and Great Exhibition of the North is giving it its UK premiere. It has lots of surprises in store for us, bringing dinosaurs to life in the middle of a shopping centre is just one of them, how amazing will that be? I can’t wait to see what other weird and wonderful experiences Deepframe brings to the Exhibition!

3. every thing every time

If you wander down Grey Street in Newcastle during Great Exhibition of the North this summer, be sure to stop and look for a unique digital display – every thing every time – outside the Theatre Royal. It will be sharing stories about our city in real time using data generated by visitors, residents and workers. From this data, poems will emerge that will encourage you to see the urban landscape differently through the technologies that quantify it. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? This is a brilliantly, innovative installation by artist Naho Matsuda.

5. Future Homes

Digital technology is increasingly finding its way in to our homes. You may already think you’re ahead of the game if you have digital gadgets in every room, but imagine if you had internal walls that could move to transform those rooms in to something else? This is just one idea that could be a feature in the homes of the future. Step inside a virtual reality home and discover many more at this free event created by Future Homes which showcases new ways to build, power and tailor our living spaces to make them more responsive to our ever changing lives.

Don’t forget: Wayfinder App

Not only that – there is a brilliant new app to help you get the most out of Great Exhibition of the North. You can explore the Hubs, discover the trails and meet our special mascots. More information coming soon!
