School’s out for summer and if you have children in your family then no doubt you’ll be doing everything you can to avoid those two dreaded words “I’m bored”. Don’t worry, this summer could be your most fun-filled ever thanks to Great Exhibition of the North.
With so many events and activities happening across NewcastleGateshead from 22 June – 9 September, you’ll never be short of ideas. It’s all free to enjoy too, so keeping everyone entertained needn’t break the bank!
If you’ve not experienced the Get North Trails yet then those should be at the top of your list. Once you’ve explored the trails and each of the Hub Venues – Great North Museum, Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, here are some other summer highlights for you to enjoy with the family…
Get North Family Expo at St James’ Park: 4 – 9 August 2018
There are tons of events taking place at St James’ Park during the Get North Family Expo. The programme is jam packed with activities that encourage 7-14 year olds to invent, craft, experiment and tinker until their heart’s content, (younger children are more than welcome to come and join in too).
A series of workshops will run from Monday 6 August to Thursday 9 August giving children the chance to get creative in The Gadget Factory and try out coding, robotics, 3D printing and loads more. Some lucky little ones will even be playing football in the park with Newcastle United Foundation!
Unsurprisingly, the workshops are now all fully booked with waiting lists for each day, but fear not…The Family Expo Weekend in NUFC’s Bamburgh Suite on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August is open to all, simply turn up and enjoy 60 hands-on activities to inspire young imaginations, from comic book making to creating robots!
Bridges Family Zone at Sage Gateshead: 4 August – 2 September 2018
Sage Gateshead is a wonderful venue to visit at any time of year, offering magnificent panoramic views of the stunning NewcastleGateshead Quayside. Families can drop in this summer and explore the musical inspiration behind ‘Bridges’, a magical animated adventure specially commissioned for Great Exhibition of the North. Not only will Sage Gateshead be screening the heart-warming story there’ll be a Family craft zone to enjoy too, perfect for families with under-10’s.
Design a Chair for Grandma Bear at Great North Museum: Every Saturday from 28 July – 18 August 2018
Artistic little ones could win their very own puppet bear by getting creative at the Great North Museum and designing, drawing or colouring a special chair for Grandma Bear. A perfect activity for under 5’s.
Remake a Take! green screen film-making sessions at Great North Museum: 16 August 2018
Calling all wannabe Scorseses and have-a-go Luhrmanns. This is your chance to become the next best film-maker! Join the Remake a Take team at Great North Museum for a free workshop. Pick a prop and jump in front of their green screen to feature in your favourite classic film from Billy Elliot to Harry Potter.
Street Theatre Performances at Gateshead Quays Performance Square: 25 – 27 August 2018
Bread and Butter Theatre will be entertaining the crowds in Gateshead this August bank holiday weekend and are sure to fill the air with the sounds of raucous laughter. Vince Vinyl will be there spinning the tunes on his wheels of steel, naughty fairies will be flying in to solve your gardening problems and keep an eye out for pesky pirates trying to recruit new shipmates. There’ll be performances every hour from 11am – 4pm each day.
The Extraordinary Garden at Gateshead Quays Performance Square: 1 & 2 September 2018
Things might look a bit different around Gateshead Quays during the first weekend in September. A giant, interactive, inflatable garden will appear full of fun and curious creatures. Come and take a walk through the intriguing installations, you might even bump in to the ‘strolling gardeners’ who are sure to make you giggle with their entertaining street theatre antics.
Parental Guidance Parties at Sage Gateshead: 26 August & 8 September 2018
Back by popular demand, Sage Gateshead will host TWO more Parental Guidance Parties this summer and the whole family are invited! Get your dancing feet ready for more live music from Maximo Park‘s Paul Smith and a morning with The Futureheads‘ Ross Millard. Both events are FREE and you just need to rock up!
As if all this wasn’t enough, there are still loads more free family events waiting to be discovered throughout the full Great Exhibition of the North programme.
With so many unique events to experience, boredom doesn’t stand a chance when you’re in Newcastle and Gateshead!
