Steve Messam – Whistle

Listen out for the evocative sound of steam engine whistles once again echoing across the city of Newcastle.
At precisely 1pm each day during the Exhibition a sequence of locomotive whistles will reverberate around the edge of the city, drawing an audible line along the medieval town wall.
The sound installation is designed to recall the role of the North in engineering and the invention of the railway, sparking memories and forging links between past and present.
If you’re out and about in the streets or on the quays you’ll hear the sequence above the soundscape of the city.
