Our Talking Statue, the George Charlton Memorial Drinking Fountain, is located opposite the north door of Saltwell Towers. This gothic style fountain, unveiled on 5 September 1876, dedicated to George Charlton, a Methodist preacher.

The Talking Statues project was developed as part of an exciting new collaboration between the Friends of Saltwell Park (FoSP), Newcastle University’s Open Lab and Heritage ACT! This developing project aims to bring the heritage of Saltwell Park to life in a new, novel way. By combining the knowledge and passion of FoSP members with new technologies, we have provided an electronic way to share our community’s heritage and make it more accessible.

After listening to the statue, the app gives you a fun way to tour around the Park’s 12 Grade ll listed structures. Click start on the Memorial Fountain to start and the app will tell you how far away you are from your next goal!
