The Needle Points North

The diversity and essence of our communities, culture and landscapes are captured in 14 huge intricate textile panels made by individual branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild.

The Needle Points North takes you on a thread-by-thread tour of the North of England.

See the area through the fabric and stitches of embroiderers who’ve captured the essence of their homeland in an intricate textile artwork.

While the overall design is by Anne Johnson, each of 14 branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild – from Cumbria to Teesside – have created a panel specific to their area.

The grey stone walls, deliberately misty and cold, represent how ‘outsiders’ may see the North, but closer inspection through them reveals in vibrant colour its landmarks, buildings, culture and heritage.

Don’t miss the chance to see Guild members demonstrating some of their techniques on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
