Reducing staffing costs – redundancy and the alternatives

GEOTN banner image

With the furlough scheme ending and being replaced by the Job Support Scheme some business are looking at whether they can reduce staff costs without resorting to redundancies, although some business unfortunately will need to make redundancies. Jamie Gamble, employment partner at Ward Hadaway, will help you assess your options in this challenging period and help you navigate the legal issues involved in dealing with these changes against a backdrop of remote working and furlough.

The session will include:
• looking at a range of alternatives to redundancy, including: lay off, short time working, reduced hours, reduced pay.
• handling redundancy and restructuring meetings remotely and assessing the risks for making redundancies in the current climate.
• ensuring that dismissing for redundancy any previously furloughed staff will be fair. You may have furloughed at speed, but redundancy selection criteria cannot be defined by such factors.
• particular risks with employees who have been shielding or have had child care issues.
