Idea of North

Idea of North banner image

A series of pavilions, constructions and projects displaying work exploring Northern imagination and identities, including a photography exhibition documenting women in the North, curated by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen.

Explore Northern imagination and identity with this celebration of architecture, photography, music, design and culture.

From within a series of pavilions and architectural constructions spanning BALTIC’s vast Level 4, you’ll discover some of reasons the North has earned its global reputation for resilience and resurgence.

Consider the representation of women in the North East with a major exhibition curated by celebrated photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen.

You’ll even get a glimpse of the underground music scene of Gateshead and the little-known cave rave scene of the 1990s.

Artists include: Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, David Blandy and Larry Archiampong, Chris Killip and Matt Stokes.
