Blog post by Rachel Kershaw writer of Life in Geordieland, the blog guide to NewcastleGateshead.

Navigate your way around Great Exhibition of the North and get the most out of your adventures this summer by downloading the Get North Wayfinder app. This nifty app has been created right here in the North by clever developers at Shout Digital in Newcastle and it’s full of handy features to make your explorations easier and even more fun.

Create your own Personalised Trail

My favourite feature within the app is that it allows you to create personalised trails, tailored to your specific interests. It’s perfect for families and groups who want to experience a mixture of different events and activities.

Just answer a few simple questions about the age and interests of the people in your party and where you would like your personalised trail to start and you’ll soon be on your way to making amazing discoveries.

The first time I tried out this feature of the app, it encouraged me to check out awe-inspiring places that hadn’t even been on my radar previously. Venues like Northumbria University, Northern Design Centre and Cooper’s Studios that I may have made the mistake of wandering past without realising how much was going on inside.

Great Exhibition of the North is on until Sunday 9 September so use this feature of the app as much as you like, every time you give a different set of answers you’ll get new and exciting suggestions for places to visit.

Snap, Find and Collect

The Get North App isn’t just an alternative to carrying a map around, it’s interactive and has three different games you can play along with too!

By snapping pictures, solving puzzles and collecting items using QR Codes, you’ll learn even more about the pioneering spirit of the North and your efforts will be rewarded with ‘crystals’. My niece and nephew are huge Pokemon fans so they will love the idea of collecting crystals and no doubt this playful feature of the app will create some friendly rivalry to see who can collect the most. To access this feature simply click on the ‘games and activities’ tab when you visit each new location.

Exploring the Get North Trails

As you will have probably worked out by now, there are three trails at the heart of Great Exhibition of the North, helping you make amazing discoveries in Art, Design and Innovation. With the Get North App you can follow these trails with ease, as it uses Google maps to direct you from one destination to the next.

Once you’ve selected your chosen trail, click on the venue you want to head to first and hey presto, you’ll get step by step guidance, journey times and useful information like opening times and whether or not there’s refreshments and toilets available – it’s like having your very own tour guide in the palm of your hand!

Be a Savvy Explorer with NE1 Offers

A big day out doesn’t have to be a big expense this summer. Not only are all the events and

experiences of Great Exhibition of the North free to enjoy, but if you download the Get North App and click on the NE1 Offers tab you’ll also get direct access to a whole host of money saving food and drink offers across the city.!

The Get North App itself is also free so if you haven’t downloaded yet, what are you waiting for? It’s your passport to an amazing summer in NewcastleGateshead.
